福如東海 charm 麒麟

Dear Chinese friends,
Could this be a Qilin instead of a horse?
The only reference I found is Yoshintei Zosenpu. 1890

Yes, it looks like Qilin. There are some other Qilin charms but no similar style like this.
Chinese 福如东海 (happiness) is always connected with 寿比南山 (long life). Qilin is always connected with 麒麟送子.

Thank you very much for your answer! So the charm I have, must be quite rare and pre-1890 (most likely I guess Qing dynasty)-since the book from which the rubbing is (next to my coin) was written in 1890. However, it doesn't appear to be the same piece, as the rim seems much thinner on my coin than the rubbing? All other references I could find on Chinese charms so far, didn't contain it. But maybe in Chinese language more references are available than I could find.

I searched the key word "麒麟" on shouxi.com data base http://data.shouxi.com/item_list.php, and Huaxia Ancient, I didn't find similar charm. I guessed it was made in a private silver house, and maybe one family ordered this for a special birthday for some elder person.

Thank you! I lived several years in Zhejiang China and now am living back in Germany and collecting some Chinese coins and ancient charms that are sold in Europe. There is so much to learn about ancient Chinese culture.

Sounds wonderful experience. I visited Germany in 2006 for Worldcup report, have very deep impression with many cities.
Yes, ancients is a main part of Chinese coins, with rich Chinese triditional culture, it beyond numismatic.
Ancient, sycee, banknote, milled...it is more complecated, much to learn.

oh, and by the way, this coin - even if a private cast - must have been available to the author Yoshintei Zosenpu. before he published its rubbing in 1890.

Obviously, I think it's a good fortune charm of Qing dynasty.

Hi oldglimmer, a senior experts friend told me this Qilin was made in Japan.
